Living in a majority white city like Seattle. Every February is weird. There’s no acknowledgement of Black History Month despite the Black Lives Matters posters everywhere. Every thing is performative here. Nothing is really genuine. The allies have been silent and stand up when Alex Pretti was eliminated. Isn’t that crazy? Black people in Seattle are so used to performative allyship that they don’t question it. They don’t ask themselves why things never truly get any better. Why black authors are still nothing more than an afterthought? Why black businesses are rarer here than a 3 dollar bill? Why wealth inequality never gets any less unequal? There are so many questions and the answers are quite simple. Some people possess generational wealth and are comfortable and they’re not Black people. You pretend to hold anger at the state of the world while you assess your grandfather’s trust fund it’s inexcusable. At least be real. Tell us you don’t give a flying flip about us. Tell us you only want to sleep with Black people but NEVER marry one of us. There are those that want to be fetishized. Just keep it real please. But most of yall can’t or simply refuse to be honest.
