Everyone is hosting these events. They all claim to foster a sense of community while the organizers pad their pockets. I grew up selling ice cream and candy when I was a teenager and respect the hustle. What I can’t respect is the deception and unauthentic nature of what’s happening in Seattle. People are being charged just to come to a building and talk to or be talked at by strangers. If they were getting some kind of value out of it then it wouldn’t be a scam. Teaching people a new language, how to sew or how to cook is worth charging money for. Goods and services are worth money even networking opportunities where people build actual communities where everyone’s invited is worth it. But in Seattle very little community has been built at these events where organizers make cash and event goers leave without making even one new friend. People exchange socials but rarely interact again unless in passing. I have tried to find ways to build community but will try to let it come to me now.
